Cataracts are one of the leading causes of diminished vision among older adults in the United States. When a cataract causes enough blurring to make vision difficult or otherwise endanger the eye, it can be safely removed by a surgical procedure.
There are many causes of cataract development including inherited diseases and diabetes. Most cataracts are thought to be caused by age, sunlight exposure over many years, systemic disease or simple genetics. Cataracts can occur at any age.
